Type of rectifier, an electronic device that
conducts electricity in one direction only.
The thyristor is composed of layers of
semiconductor material sandwiched between two
electrodes called the anode and cathode. The
current can be switched on by using a third
electrode called the gate. Thyristors are
used to control mains-driven motors and in
lighting dimmer controls.
